MP3 is a method of audio compression that substantially reduces the size of audio files. The compression reduces file size by losing some of the data and consequently the quality of the recording. However, a typical mp3 file (128k / sec) approaches the quality of CD and is just 9% of the size of CD quality audio. This trade off is acceptable to most listeners and many albums are now sold over the internet as mp3 or similar compressed formats.
